Mafutha…What a name. Where did it come from? Well for the past 18 years I’ve been working at Mcdonald’s. In one of them I worked with a person named Tsedi. She’s originally from the country of Lesotho. She met her future husband there while he was with the peace corp and after they got married they moved here in Lancaster, pa.
It was great working with her; a person full of energy and joy. But a time came there were 2 of use with the same name and she then proceeded to call me mafutha. Of course she didn’t tell me what it meant but it stuck. She finally told me the meaning….Fat. Yep it fits very well since I am a little bit fat.
I still enjoy hearing those who worked with me at that time still call me that. Tsedi has moved on, just recently getting a degree in nursing. Plus she, a few years ago, brought her daughter Agnus over from the old country. Agnus works at the local Weis market I go to so it’s nice to keep up with old friends.
The best part it the experience of dealing man people from many cultures. Wonderful!
